In Memoriam

26,910. That is the number of mice Ariel probably ate over her lifetime. But she did a lot more than eat a lot of mice. Ariel the Swainson Hawk visited hundreds of classrooms and touched the hearts of thousands of children in the past 23 years with the Saskatoon Zoo Society. If you lived in Saskatoon in the last quarter century, you’ve probably met Ariel. She was an amazing ambassador, teaching adults and children alike about the ecology of the Swainson Hawk and the importance of grassland species. She was a wonderfully magnificent bird with her own special personality and we have been incredibly fortunate to be able to work, play, teach and learn with and from her. Thank you Ariel for sharing your life with us.

It is with great sadness that the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo announces the passing away of Tarzan Junior our male Brown Capuchin.  He passed away on Friday July 8, 2016, at the age of 31 years.  Tarzan Junior was born here at the zoo April 25, 1985.  At that time he would have been living in the monkey exhibit that was located in the barn.  Tarzan had a sister born in 1993 and a brother born in 1995.  Both went to the Jungle Cat World in 2007.  His mother ‘Ma’ was born in 1972 and is still living at our zoo.

Tarzan will be greatly missed by the zookeepers and many regular zoo patrons.  He was fun to watch swinging on the ropes, and foraging for his food.  He often came right up to the window to greet visitors and was a favorite with the kids camps when they made enrichment boxes for them to get treats from.
